En 1981 lanzó los jeans Armani y Emporio Armani. Es uno de los diseñadores más influyentes de los años ochenta. Su éxito se basa en su interpretación del atuendo masculino, la adaptación del mismo a las prendas femeninas y una estética contemporánea más informal. Armani ocupa el primer lugar en el diseño de ropa de hombre y diseña también ropa femenina que sigue los principios generales del traje masculino, de medidas exageradas, pero controladas. La película "American gigolo" (1980) inicia su cooperación con el séptimo arte. Desde entonces viste a estrellas como Sean Connery, Richard Gere, Tom Cruise o Andy García.
